Santa Monica State Beach is an enormously popular beach, mostly for its proximity to the
Santa Monica Pier and
Third Street Promenade.
The beach is very wide and sandy and has a bicycle and roller skating path, volleyball nets, and the wonderful
Ocean Park Playground. Rest rooms, outdoor showers, bike and skate rentals, and several food concession stands are available along the way.
The beach is also home to great destinations like historic
Santa Monica Pier Carousel, the kid-focused
Santa Monica Pier Aquarium the amusement park rides at
Pacific Park, and the irresistible
Muscle Beach Traveling Rings. As of 2009, one of the highlights of the area is the
Annenberg Community Beach House.
Year-round lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours. This beach is also a good spot for beginning level
surfers and boogie boarders to stretch their water wings. Always check with the lifeguards to find out where they're allowing boards that day, and be ready to take the board out of the water if the famous 'black ball' comes out - the sign that the ratio of boards to people is no longer safe.
