About Shane's Inspiration

One of seven playgrounds in Griffith Park, Shane's Inspiration is the newest, on Griffith Park Drive, near the Park Center picnic area.

The playground is named after Shane Williams, who died in 1998, two weeks after being born severely disabled. In his memory, his parents created a playground for children in wheelchairs, and with other disabilities. Known as a boundless playground, the intention is to make the structures safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all kinds of children, and it succeeds; this is a great playground!

You'll find huge, armchair swings for mothers cradling babies, slides, tunnels, bridges, a miniature 'driving area' - complete with stop signs and lane lines - for bikes and scooters, sand boxes, boat, plane and train shapes for pretend driving, rocketship shapes for pretend blasting-off, dinosaur and castle shapes for just pretending, and tire swings. And all of it is on a thick, rubberized surface to protect knees, elbows, and heads.

Plenty of new bathrooms have just been built, too.

Tips

Follow the signs within Griffith Park to the Merry-Go-Round. The colorful equipment of Shane's Inspiration will draw you to the play area.

Getting There

Griffith Park's main entrance is at Riverside Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard; take the Los Feliz Blvd. exit off the 5 Freeway, head west, and turn left on to Griffith Park Drive. Follow signs to the Merry-Go-Round which shares a parking lot with the playground.

Great playground, but lots of coyotes circling the perimeter, scavenging for food.

We recently discovered this park and have since visited it a couple of times. Our 16-month-old has a blast here. A favorite are the solid high-backed green swings. She's not a fan of the normal toddler swing, but she'll happily swing on these for ages. And although she sits in it comfortably, I can also sit and hold her for another fun swinging option. There are myriad places to run, climb, spin, explore, and slide. There are small stations with jingly bars that she can rattle to make noise among many other interactive spots. The play area is very large and has ramps everywhere. Obviously at 16 months she is on the younger side of the park's guests (though babies certainly are not a strange sight here), and will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. She has taller slides, monkeybars, group tire swing, and even a small zipline-type feature to look forward to. Restrooms and picnic grounds are right on location. It's wonderful!

Our family go the last Saturday of each month to Shane's Inspiration club. Anyone can join. The playground is accessiable to walkers, wheelchairs, sight impaired etc. The playground lets all children be themselves. Our daughter has spina bifida uses a walker, HKAFO's and a wheelchair and is able to play with other able bodied peers. The last Saturday of the month there is face painting crafts, a moment to share with all the friends you meet there. It brings high self esteem to children of disabilities and also brings awareness to children with no medical issues. It will be a day you never forget. Check out the web site Shanes Inpiration.org and come visit youll never forget it and will be hooked forever.
