Bell bottoms and Bee Gees aren't the only ‘70s pop culture staples to withstand the spin cycle of time. The Sherman Oaks Castle Park parties on with agelessly fun activities found on grounds that marry Queen Elizabeth to Jeff Spicoli. Beyond the drawbridge gate, and through the castle arcade, lies the park's main attraction - a group of three, 18-hole miniature golf courses. Each of the recently refurbished courses has themed holes (including the famed Candy House on course one). For each game, prices are $6.50 for adults and $5.50 for children (under 13) and seniors. Replay games (for folks who want to take another spin around a course) are $3. For groups of 20 or more, adults are $4.40 and kids are $3.50. Inside the castle walls, the arcade features the classic Ms. Pacman and Centipede games. The boisterous game headquarters has a number of the latest interactive experiences, including Dance Revolution USA and Star Wars Racer. Also, there are pinball machines and redemption games that pump out tickets that can be redeemed for prizes. Just north of the large parking lot is one of the Valley's better batting cage facilities. Nine cages range in speed from slo-pitch (15-20 mph) to fastball (80mph). You can get 30 pitches for $3 or rent the cages in 15-minute increments (going from $24 for the first 30 minutes to $42 for an hour). Birthday parties are a source of pride for Sherman Oaks Castle Park, as generations can attest. For a minimum of ten guests, party packages coat $10.95/person for the "Royal," and $13.95 for the "Imperial." Included in these packages are such goodies as food, miniature golf games, arcade privileges, use of the party area, and clean up. Best suited for children seven and older, the park is a pretty rambunctious place. The bathrooms can get messy and the arcade area gets real loud, especially on weekends. On weekend nights, you'll find a large number of older, unchaperoned kids; it's best to accompany kids under 15 on those nights. Still, for junior-high school age kids, especially, it's a great centralized place for family time.
