Parents' Picks quest to find the
Best Playground for Little Kids in Philadelphia, the
SMITH The Kids' Play Place in the Park (formerly known as Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse) has provided many generations of children in Philadelphia with a place for indoor and outdoor fun.
The
playground includes a special space for toddlers ages two and under, 20 interactive play pieces in a Tot-Lot for children ages five and under, and an area for kids ages ten and under that includes a 12-foot wide, 40-foot long, and 10-foot high wooden slide, a giant see-saw, and climbing boulders.
The
playhouse is three floors of fun for supervised children five years and younger. In "Smithville" on the bottom floor, there are all sorts of bikes and cars for kids to ride around a miniature town that includes a stop light, gas station, and metered parking. The top floor is the best space for crawlers, but kids of all ages will love the multitude of toys that include a kitchen, a train table, dinosaurs, and plenty of dolls, pull-toys, and stacking toys. And thankfully, there are no loud, flashy toys, so even with a crowd, the room still maintains some sense of peace. Other highlights at the playhouse include a book nook, a foam block room, and a large climbing train. Note that advance reservations are required for groups of five or more children.
The
summer camp program, also for children ages six to 10, lasts for six weeks every summer. There is a nominal fee and advance registration is required.
On the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 10:30am, there is a
storytelling program for children five and under. Advance registration is requested.
SMITH also hosts a
Cooperative Preschool on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from October to April. A fee is charged and registration is required. Contact the venue for more information about these special programs.
