about Smithsonian American Art Museum:

The Smithsonian American Art Museum shares space with the National Portrait Gallery, in the renovated Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. The collection spans three floors and features colonial portraits, nineteenth-century landscapes, American impressionism, twentieth-century realism and abstraction, New Deal projects, sculpture, photography, prints and drawings, contemporary crafts and decorative arts, African American art, Latino art, and folk art. In addition, the museum houses works in the Renwick Gallery.

tips:

Free walk-in tours of the permanent contemporary craft collection are offered weekdays at noon and Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm.

getting there:

Parking is scarce, but the museum is across the street from the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop, on the Green and Yellow lines.
