Smithsonian Information Center: The Castle050

Completed in 1855, the original Smithsonian Institution Building, popularly known as "the Castle" and centrally located on the National Mall, today houses the Smithsonian Information Center - a great first stop for all visitors. Here, helpful volunteer information specialists are on hand to provide information on the Smithsonian's 19 museums and the National Zoo, answer questions, and provide direction.

While here, visitors can pick up a free copy of goSmithsonian; watch a free, 18-minute orientation video, shown continuously; view captioned interactive video programs on the Smithsonian museums (in various languages). Other resources include a scale model of monumental Washington and a small café offering light fare. Also, guided tours of the Castle are offered on certain days; call ahead or go online for details.

Don't miss the rose window and the National Zoo's panda cub on the "panda cam" in the Commons, a room that displays sample objects from all Smithsonian museums. And while you may be in a hurry to check out all the other wonderful Smithsonian museums, do give the kids at least a peek at the Children's Room. If you exit through this gorgeous spot, oohing and aahing at the trompe l'oeil art, you'll find yourselves walking through the lovely Enid Haupt Victorian Garden.
