This neighborhood institution - changing with the times since the 40's, but in only good ways (like when they switched from summer-only to year-round hours) - does big things in a small way. Take its fantabulous organic ice cream, for example - and trust us, you'll want to...
Sonny's uses top-quality ingredients - with cream from cows that are like members of the family - to mix up small five-gallon batches of its signature Sonny's and Ahana brands of "artisan ice cream." Unusual flavors like Cardamon Black Pepper and the namesake Crema are a draw, but here, even the vanilla is extra special, made with a blend of beans from several countries. Many flavors are now available in stores and restaurants throughout the region, but there's no selling out going on here, just an uncomprising devotion to quality that's getting its due.
The restaurant, a more recent addition, serves up gourmet grub in a tiny dining area, including weekend brunch. Many of the organic offerings are vegetarian-friendly, but they might be a bit too high-brow for kids' tastes.
In nice weather, try sitting out on the narrow tongue of a patio on the south side - it's an exquisite little refuge the owners designed and landscaped themselves.
