South Carlsbad State Beach Campground offers 222 sites for tents or RVs up to 35 feet long. The camp sites are on the bluffs overlooking the beach, with stairs leading to the beach. Picnic tables, fire grills, and piped water are on site. Flush toilets and showers, as well as a dump station, are available. Some sites are handicapped accessible. Laundry facilities and groceries are available in nearby Carlsbad. Pets are allowed on a leash.

getting there:

From I-5, exit on Palomar Airport Road and continue west. Turn right onto Carlsbad Boulevard South and continue to the campground entrance.

I think this is one of the best places to camp by the beach with kids. The views of the coast are incredible if you have a bluff campsite. We've even watched pods of dolphins go by in the ocean. The waves crash slowly and far out so that kids don't get trampled by the waves. Lots of room for sand castles also. The only draw back is the stairs you have to climb to go to the bathroom or back to the campsite. The bathrooms are clean and easy to use as well as the large campsites. Fun for the entire family.
