A rocky ravine, gentle rapids, and a bit of a mystery await visitors to Cleveland Metroparks'
South Chagrin Reservation.
"Squaw Rock" provides the mystery: images Henry Church carved in sandstone in the 1880s may celebrate American history, or they may have been meant as an artistic condemnation of our government's policies at that time.
The two-mile trail is for steady climbers with good boots; not recommended for kids under five years old.
Other things to do: The paved, all-purpose trail gives younger kids, strollers and bikes plenty of room to move. Some special events are held at
Look About Lodge, located on the north side of the reservation, however, it is open to visitors during scheduled programs only. To reach the lodge by phone, call 440.247.7075.
South Chagrin also boasts a playground and a popular,
steep sledding hill; enter off Chagrin River Road on the north side of the park.
Fishing is allowed at
Shadow Lake, located in the reservation on Hawthorn Parkway, about two miles southeast of Route 91.
South Chagrin Reservation also offers
four picnic areas - the large stone "Shelterhouse" can be reserved by calling the Metroparks office at 216.635.3200.
