Located beneath the rugged Wilson cliffs and within the
Red Rock Natural Conservation Area, Spring Mountain Ranch has a
long history. In the mid-nineteenth century, the area's numerous natural springs made it an oasis destination for Native Americans and westward travelers; outlaws liked it too. It was turned into a cattle ranch by the 1870s, a purpose it served until the 1960s.
Parkgoers today can see the main ranch house - which serves as a
visitor's center - as well as a cemetery, cabins and bunkhouse, and a blacksmith's shop. October brings
Pioneer Living Days, which includes costumed role playing, demonstrations, and reenactments of historic events.
Budding gardeners will appreciate the area's flora:
desert and woodland plants thrive here, and if the winter's rains have been generous, the spring wildflower show alone is worth the drive.
Picnic areas are also available.
Guided tours are given on weekdays on the hour between noon and 2pm; on weekends, they run between noon and 3pm.
