Built in 1894 and once the largest and busiest railroad terminal in the world, the impressive Romanesque
St. Louis Union Station was designated a
National Historic Landmark in 1976 and completely restored in the mid-1980s. The barrel-vaulted and gilded
Grand Hall remains the architectural gem of the station. Self-guided tours are available for visitors to learn about the building's history and restoration.
Today, Union Station is a favorite destination among St. Louisans and tourists for its
lively marketplace of shops, assortment of fine restaurants and cafés, live entertainment, and its boating lake. The complex also houses the
Union Station Hyatt Regency hotel.
The station and its plaza are used throughout the year as a venue for
special events and activities, including children's entertainment, sporting events, and exhibits.
