about Stanford University Cantor Arts Center:

Located on the Stanford University campus and formerly known as the Stanford Museum, the Iris & B.Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts offers children a glimpse of paintings, sculpture, and artifacts from all over world. The Cantor Arts Center boasts the only "comprehensive" art collection between San Francisco and San Diego. The museum was recently refurbished after the 1989 earthquake, and a beautiful, modern wing was added to expand display space.

Wander the galleries at your own pace or for those with older children, consider an Introduction to the Collection tour held Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm.

What children may enjoy most is the spectacular Rodin Sculpture Garden. Located adjacent to the museum, this is the largest collection of Rodin sculpture outside the Musee Rodin in Paris. Not only are the sculptures breathtaking, but it's fun to run around them.

Classes: Art classes are sometimes offered, for ages six through high school. Each class combines gallery time with studio activities, corresponding to current or upcoming exhibitions as well as to the collection on view. Request a full schedule with fees and registration form by calling 650.725.3155. Scholarships for all classes are available.

tips:

The museum is small enough in scale to cover in one visit, if you are so inclined. For burgeoning artists, bring a blanket and modeling clay, find a grassy spot and, inspired by these incredible Rodin sculptures, try your own hand. There is also a hip cafe to refresh the young and weary.

getting there:

The museum is located at Lomita Drive and Museum Way on the Stanford University campus. From Highway 101, take the University Avenue exit heading west. Follow University Avenue until it turns in Palm Drive. Continue until you reach Museum Way. WARNING: Stay in the left-hand lane or you will be forced to turn right early. At Museum Way, turn right (there is only one lane at this point on Palm Drive, so you don't need to be in the right hand lane), and the museum is directly in front of you.
