The Staten Island Y offers an Early Childhood Center with 2 age-appropriate fenced-in playgrounds and classes for children as young as 1 year, including Mommy and Me, pre-school soccer, yoga, music, drama, sports and martial arts, in addition to a nursery school program accredited by the Department of Health. The nursery program includes half day, full day and extended day options. Swim classes for kids begin as early as 6 months. Children 5-14 can choose classes ranging from gymnastics to Tae Kwon Do, dance, arts and crafts, writing, computer training, basketball, floor hockey, soccer and golf. The Y's volunteer-organized Baseball League can accomodate 960 children. The YMCA Basketball League for children ages 7-16 begins in April. The Y also has a theater workshop, which meets twice a week, and a virtual Y after school program for elementary school kids which runs from 3pm-6pm weekdays. For teens (11-15), the Y offers Friday evening get-togethers (pre-registration required, but the program is free for Staten Islanders), step and fitness classes and weight training. Make sure your older kids check out the New York State Youth & Government Program, and get your adolescent daughters hooked up with Girls Inc. This Y has a pool and two gymnasiums. Babysitting service for children from 6 months to 5 years of age, is available Mon-Sat from 9am-12noon; Mondays and Thursdays from 5pm-8pm. This service is provided free of charge to those with an Adult or Family membership. There is a $2.00 hourly fee per child for all others. Limit 1 ½ hrs/ day.
