Once the site of the historic Phoenix Indian School, Steele Indian School Park offers urban residents lush, open terrain and design elements reflective of its Native American history.
The Circle of Life walkway is the heart of the park, encompassing three remaining Indian School buildings: the Memorial Hall, Band Building, and Dining Hall, a 1901 structure that will eventually serve as a Native American Cultural Center. A decorative water cistern and 24 interpretive columns underscore the park's history and design theme.
An arbor bridge leads into the 15-acre Entry Garden, which features contemplation and meditation paths. Etchings of Native American poems and desert plants adorn the walkways. An outdoor amphitheater shares a waterfall with the 2.5-acre Bird Lake and serves as host for community events like the annual Fabulous Phoenix 4th festivities.
The park's north side boasts a 15-acre neighborhood playground, featuring basketball and volleyball courts, plus shaded ramadas for picnicking.
The Phoenix Green offers 30 acres of raised walkways, grassy terrain, and clusters of mature shade trees. An oasis in the desert, the Green is an extension of Steele Indian School and can be accessed by the park's 7th Street entrance.
