The
Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is a companion facility to the
National Air and Space Museum, dedicated to the display and preservation of its collection of historic aviation and space artifacts. Located near Washington Dulles International Airport, the Udvar-Hazy Center (pronounced OOD-var HAH-zee) provides much needed space for the objects that tell the history of aviation and space flight. The museum includes exhibit hangars, an observation tower from which visitors can watch air traffic at Dulles Airport, collections storage, classrooms, archives, a McDonald's, an IMAX theater, gift shops, and more.
The aviation hangar contains three levels of aircraft - two levels suspended from the building's huge trusses and a third on the floor. The suspended aircraft have been hung in their typical flight maneuvers. Visitors will see an aerobatic airplane hot-dogging upside down, a World War II fighter angling for a victory and a small two-seater flying level. Walkways rising about four stories above the floor provide nose-to-nose views of aircraft in suspended flight.
The James S. McDonnell Space Hangar displays hundreds of famous spacecraft, rockets, satellites, and space-related small artifacts. The centerpiece of the space hangar is the
Space Shuttle Enterprise. Other space artifacts include the Gemini VII space capsule; the Mobile Quarantine Unit used upon the return of the Apollo 11 crew; and a Redstone rocket.
For food there is a McDonald's; please note that food and drink must be consumed inside McDonald's/McCafe and may not be taken into the Museum.
