about Summer Shack:

As is evidenced by the towering salty sea captain next to the entrance at the Cambridge location, chef Jasper White's Summer Shack takes seafood seriously. The atmosphere is very laid back and kid-friendly. Children are greeted with crayons and helium balloons. Tables, picnic and otherwise, are covered in paper just screaming for original, crayon masterpieces. You'll find high chairs, booster seats, and a changing table in the ladies room. The food choices for children are relatively small. It offers hamburgers ($4.50), macaroni and cheese, corn dogs, and fried chicken fingers ($5). Adventurers may opt to slurp down a dozen oysters. Items like fries and corn on the cob are a la carte. Despite the limited kid-specific fare, the food is likely to keep them happy. The hustle and bustle of the place will also entertain and amuse.

message from Summer Shack:

Kids can pile on the toppings at the make-your-own sundae bar. Sundaes are free with the purchase of a children?s meal every Sunday from 5pm to 7pm.

tips:

A "must see" at the Cambridge location is the enormous lobster tank as you enter the restaurant. Water rushes over scads of lobsters unaware of the fate that awaits. The large machinery will inspire delight too. There is a basket for transferring lobsters and a huge steamer for clams, lobsters, etc. The manager notes that no one actually sees the lobsters going into the steamer. No need to tell the kids that Larry the Lobster is merely taking a bath.

getting there:

Directly across the Alewife T station on the Red Line. There is free parking in their lot.
