Founded by Robert Redford in 1969, Sundance Resort stands out among the other ski resorts in the area. Robert Redford purchased thousands of acres of land in Provo Canyon with the desire to "preserve the natural splendor of the area and to develop a small, sustainable community for nature and the arts."
Skiing (downhill and cross country) and snowboarding are a big attraction at the resort. Sundance Resort caters to all skill levels, and offers ski and snowboard instruction, as well as equipment rentals. Kids ages four and up can sign up for ski lessons, and ages seven and up are welcome to take snowboard lessons. Check the website for a complete list of lessons and pricing.
The ski season typically runs early December to early April, and visitors can expect over 300 inches of snowfall annually. The resort has 41 runs, which are serviced by three lifts. The runs are divided equally between beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Call 801.223.4849 or check the website for more information about skiing at Sundance Resort. During the ski season, the lifts are in operation for day skiing from 9am to 4:30pm. Night skiing is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 4:30pm to 9pm. Twilight skiing offers an earlier start to the night skiing, letting skiers hit the slopes at 2:30pm.
Summer recreation abounds during the warmer months. Fly fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking bring summer outdoor enthusiasts to Sundance Resort. The resort is happy to help guests and visitors arrange any of the activities.
Scenic lift rides are available in the spring, summer, and fall. The lifts generally operate from 10am to 6pm in the spring and summer (mid May through late August). As summer turns to fall, the lifts open later (12n) and close earlier (4pm by mid October). When planning a visit, call 801.223.4121 or check the website for exact hours of lift operations and for pricing. Group rates are available.
Mountain Biking can be done on over 25 miles of challenging terrain at the resort. The single track is lift-serviced, and all trails are designed for uphill and downhill riding. Sundance Resort offers a Mountain Bike School for riders of all levels. The clinics are held daily and cover skills from basic balance to high-speed descents. Call or check online for more information or to reserve a spot. The mountain is an intermediate to advanced ride. Beginners are not encouraged to ride unless they are with a member of the Sundance Mountain Biking School. Bike and gear rentals are available through Sundance Mountain Outfitters.
A variety of guided hikes are available. Pricing for guides varies depending on the hike, and there is a two guide minimum for groups of six or more people. Details about the hikes are available on the resort's website.

The resort invites its guests and visitors to learn more about nature during private, guided hikes with Sundance naturalists.
The Sundance Nature Center offers summer camps for kids ages eight to 12. The camps have three main ideas: let the kids have fun, spend as much time outside as possible, and teach the kids about the spectacular environment of Sundance and Mount Timpanogos. During each week-long camp, the focused is on a different aspect of the natural world of the North Fork Canyon. The camps are led by a naturalist and include field studies and creative projects. Camps are offered mid June through mid August; check online for the dates, themes, and prices. Call 801.223.4044 for more information or for reservations.
Sundance Resort also boasts award-winning restaurants, a general store, and a spa. The Sunday brunch at the resort is definitely worth the drive...and the splurge.
