We(Family of 4, one 7 yo boy, one 5 yo girl) decided to drive up Farmington Canyon today to check out Sunset Campground during a "day camp." We have thought about camping here in the past but wanted to check out the facilities before committing to an overnighter. Just a note, the drive up Farmington Canyon is rough, unpaved, narrow and winding. We seemed to be the only mini van around and kept laughing that people probably thought we were crazy. It was slow going the 5 miles in and out. It looks like a great place to camp due to the setting. It really is beautiful. There are many real camping experiences to be had. We did think that the camp sites were VERY small. We couldn't figure out where one would even put up a tent in several sites. I would think that it would be only tent camping due to the space limitations. It also appeared that prior campers did not understand the pack it out philosophy. There was a lot of trash around the campgrounds. I would say that the campground is relatively primative. There are pit toilets available although I would rather pee outside than in there! They are pretty run down and full of trash. It looked like water is available during the open season. However, there was a sign posted on the entrance board that said that the water was not drinkable during part of the summer. All in all this site is for "real" campers who enjoy spending time hiking the surrounding area. There is also a trailhead at the far end on the grounds labeled Farmington Creek Trail. We were looking for the Sunset Trail. We hiked down to see a beautiful waterfall. I will write notes under Sunset Trail heading.
