We went up Farmington Canyon today to hike the Sunset Trail. The information given about this hike in not quite correct on this site. There is a trail head in the Sunset Campground but the trailhead that is located in the campground is not labeled Sunset Trail. Rather it is labeled Farmington Creek Trail. It also states that the hike is only 1/2 mile long. It is actually quite longer, it continues way past the waterfalls. We hiked with a 5yo girl and 7 yo boy. We started out at the Sunset Campground and made a steep downward trek toward the river. The trail is rocky and uneven. My husband lightly twisted his ankle on loose rocks. We got down to the river and played at the edge of the water for some time. The water level looked low at this time of the year. I can imagine that it roars in the spring runoff. We saw a few hawks soaring overhead but no other sign of wildlife. We wondered about the possibilites of mountain lions in the area.....wish that we had seen a moose. We continued on the trail a bit further and saw a beautiful waterfall from a distance. We couldn't figure out how to get closer to the falls due to the steep terrain. We continued on for a while and then ended up turning around and making the trek back up. My 5 yo complained a bit on the way back up the trail. I don't think I would do it with younger kids unless they are experienced hikers. Due to the information above not matching our experiences, I did a search when I got home for Sunset Trail. Apparently it begins much further down the canyon(where the road paving stops) and is a 3+mile hike UP. The hike we did was nice but the info is not correct in the heading on this site. Do a search online if you want the real Sunset Trail hike.
