Established in 1993,
Swaner EcoCenter (formerly called the Swaner Nature Preserve) sits on 1200 acres of mountain meadow, wetland, sagebrush upland, and riparian habitat. Natural spaces like this are becoming increasingly rare in Park City, so this land is sure to benefit future generations by providing opportunities to experience and appreciate nature and natural habitats, and maybe even inspiring some visitors to take an active role in protecting the natural world.
The
Swaner EcoCenter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The EcoCenter's main building houses exhibits, a theater, classrooms, a gift shop, a climbing wall, and a four-story tower that overlooks 1200 acres of protected land. Donations are welcome, volunteers are appreciated, and a wish list is posted on the website.
Each January and May, local fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in field trips held at the preserve. The
Swaner EcoCenter also offers one-hour
nature walks every Wednesday. The activity offers a unique opportunity to access the preserve, and affords opportunities to see wildlife and amazing scenery. The walks begin at 8:30am. Participants should dress for the weather; snowshoes can be provided if necessary. Reservations are required; call at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a spot. There is no charge, but donations are always appreciated.
During the winter months, the preserve offers
Snowshoe Stargazing. Participants learn about star constellations, planets, and other night sky objects. Guests also learn about nocturnal wildlife, the importance of wetlands, and the effects of light pollution on the environment.
Half and full day
summer camps offer children in grades 1-8 opportunities to explore nature and wildlife while learning about science, environmental ethics, health, and wellness. Watch the website for details and pricing.
Children's birthday party packages are available. Parties can include climbing on the center's two-story climbing wall, nature film screenings, wildlife treasure hunts, guided snowshoe hikes, and birdwatching expeditions complete with field guides and binoculars. Call for pricing and details.
To take a more active role in the preserve, anyone ages 12 and older are invited to
volunteer. Call the preserve or email
