about Sweet Baby Jess:
Local designer Denise Edwards has stocked this tranquil space at the edge of the Pike Place Market area with upscale casual and dressy clothes for girls (newborn-4T) and boys (newborn-24 months).
For girls, we like the line's combination of hip details with vintage-inspired femininity. Your little girl will feel like a princess in the Sophie line of special occasion dresses, which boast silk bodices and poufy tulle skirts dyed in any of the sophisticated, delicate colors of the rainbow. Slightly less formal are the fun fairy dresses, featuring a cotton bodice, tulle skirt, and small wings sewn onto the back.
The shop also sells antique bedframes, furniture, and toys, and in-house designed bedding. We saw a chenille and cotton comforter and shams in a delicate rose color and old-fashioned print - something that would take pride of place in any little girl's room.
tips:
According to the shop, parents like its special occasion dresses because of how favorably they compare in price to other retailers. And from what we saw, we'd come here first if we planned to outfit a daughter for a wedding or other big event. Special orders take two-three weeks, although rush orders are available.
getting there:
Located at 1st and Pike in downtown Seattle. Limited street parking - park in pay lots along 1st, or in the Public Market Parking lot at 1531 Western Avenue. Served by dozens of Metro bus routes from all over the city.
