We were a bit hesitant to try a class as our daughter is shy. However, she is now in her second session at Sweet Soul Movement and taking TWO classes a week (she would go every day if possible!) Rosie (the owner/director) has a special gift of seeing each child as exactly who they are, of finding their strengths and weaknesses and addressing them properly. As Poppy is more a word/story girl (and was not very in touch with her physical body) Rosie actually made her the "story girl" for the first semester. Her job was to create a short story at class end for the entire class to perform. She LOVED THIS JOB and is now dancing up a storm. She has built confidence in her abilities to use her body to express herself! Our daughter attends one of the most prestigious private schools in NYC and has attended other well known "dance classes" (which she did not like at all, nor did we as parents.) They were completely condescending to the children and spent the majority of class-time preparing for a recital! NOT why I send my child to a class. I only wish Rosie was a teacher at her school as she has had more of an impact on our child then any other thus far. VERY rarely do you find a professional who can actually teach! We also had P's birthday party there and her entire class including THE PARENTS said "this was the best party we've ever been to!" Rosie is an enormously generous and loving spirit and her students as well as their parents feel it. Our time here has been a real gift. This place is unlike any other and I have made it my personal mission to spread the word!
My child has been going to Sweet Soul Movement classes for several sessions. Words are inadequate to describe how wonderful these classes are. I have never before known a teacher that was so tuned in to each student's needs and style of learning. Rosie is energetic, compassionate, and extremely skilled at drawing a child's focus and budgeting that focused time. My child learns by leaps and bounds (literally and figuratively) during each and every class. I am thrilled that Sweet Soul Movement keeps expanding the programming so that as my child gets older she continues to have classes available for her age group and skill level.
Rosie is one of the most talented, creative, and inspirational movement teachers I have ever seen. As an educator, she is outstanding. She is able to work with each child's individucal styles and talents. The children always feel successful while learning and having fun. We can't wait to sign up for the next session. My 3 year old son loves being in her class!!!
My husband and I are both teachers. I happened to stumble on to Rosie's SWEET SOUL MOVEMENT while checking out another class for my daughter. I watched the entire class through a CRACK in the curtains that Rosie meticulously adheres before each class to ensure that the children are able to focus undisturbed. Her rule is NO PARENTS -- and I now completely understand why!! I witnessed the most amazing teacher/student relationships - hugs and high fives -- EVERY single child showeing complete and utter respect for their classmates and Rosie. Being a dancer myself - she is doing stuff with her kids that I haven't seen even in 8-10 year old classes....and the best part - the kids don't even know it! She makes it so much fun. We have come to know Rosie as our daughter is now in her 4th session -- she is one of the coolest ladies we know - loving, giving, intelligent and completely determined to do and be the absolute best she can - it is rubbing off on our child - hurrayyyyy for Rosie!!
Rosie strikes a great balance between sensitivity and discipline, creative self-expression and technique. My 3 1/2 year old has gotten so much out of the class, not so much by-rote ballet movements as basic life and movement skills that he'll benefit from for the rest of his life.
Rosie is a wonderful teacher that inspires everyone she teaches. My son loves Rosie's class and can not wait to show me what he has learned each week. Thank you Rosie for your hard work, dedication and inspiration!
