Cab companies within San Francisco differ little in service. Variations are highly dependant on the drivers and time of day. What's different about San Francisco cabs compared to those in other big cities is that they're often frustratingly hard to find. People tend to call cabs rather than stride into the street expecting to hail one. The roughly 2,000 or so licensed SF taxis simply aren't enough to meet demand, though their numbers are increasing. Oddly enough the worst time and place to find a cab is downtown during rush hour; most cabbies use that time to head for the airport (and out of the city traffic) to pick up fares. Cost: The flag drop or flat fee on climbing into a cab is $2.85. The per mile fee is $2.25; waiting time is 45 cents a minute. A typical two-mile ride from the Financial District to Fisherman's Wharf costs around $13; between the airport and downtown will cost you roughly $40, plus tip. tips:
Call for a pick up - especially when you're with the kids. If you're trying to schedule a trip to the airport, it's a good idea to make a reservation one day in advance.
