Rated a very easy hike, the Temple Quarry Nature Trail in Little Cottonwood Canyon is less than one mile long one-way and has an elevation change of 60 feet. It takes approximately twenty minutes to hike it one-way. The trail starts at the parking lot south of the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon, loops around, and then ends at the other end of the parking lot. Interpretive signs occur throughout the trail and hikers can enjoy several overlooks of Little Cottonwood Creek. The Temple Quarry Nature Trail gets its name from the fact that the area provided the granite for the construction of the Salt Lake LDS Temple in the 1800s. The trail is paved, and there is a small amphitheater located along the trail near the restrooms.
When heading into the wilderness, it's always smart to bring a daypack stocked with bug spray, sunscreen, water, tissue, and snacks. It's also fun to bring along a field guide or two and some binoculars so wildlife viewing opportunities aren't missed. The canyons are great places to see birds, moose, butterflies, wildflowers, deer, and much more. Always make sure wildlife viewing is done from a safe distance; use the binoculars to get a closer look.
No bikes, horses, dogs, or motorized vehicle use is allowed on the trail.
