Temple Square is a beautifully landscaped 10-acre plot surrounded by granite walls in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. The centerpiece is the six-spired Salt Lake Temple, which stands as the worldwide symbol of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are not open to the public.
Also located in
Temple Square is the famous
Tabernacle, home to the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the
Assembly Hall (which offers free music concerts year round), the
Beehive House (Brigham Young's former home), and the
Lion House.
During the summer, the grounds of the
Temple Square are home to beautiful gardens and several water fountains. The winter months bring many visitors to view the holiday lights around the square.
Guided tours are offered every 10 minutes in the summer and every 15 minutes in the winter. The tour lasts 45 minutes and is available in over 40 languages. It goes into the history of the Mormon church, which plays a large role in Salt Lake City's community and culture.
