The American Red Cross, Central Maryland Chapter was founded in 1905 as part of the American National Red Cross, the nation's foremost humanitarian organization. The Central Maryland Chapter has a proud history of providing emergency disaster relief, services to members of the Armed Forces, blood services, and health and safety programs for all ages. Special volunteer opportunities are available for kids or groups of kids, including assisting in various departments on special projects such as the hospital teddy bear campaign, assembling first-time blood donor kits, and assembling materials used in the collection of blood products; assisting nursing staff on a blood mobile or at a donor center in registering blood donors, recruiting donors, labeling empty containers, escorting donors, and serving refreshments; organizing fund raising activities such as a Hop-a-thon, sale of holiday flowers or cards, Dimes for Disasters, Disaster Dance, car wash party, and more; giving presentations to peers and younger audiences regarding fire prevention, home safety, and family disaster plans; participating in parades, drills, and exhibitions; and assisting with providing services to veterans at VA hospitals in Central Maryland.
