The colorful history of the Cliff House, a complex including two restaurants, two cocktail lounges and a gift store, involves a string of millionaire owners, each with grand visions for this seaside attraction. Twice destroyed by fire, the current Cliff House was built by Adolph Sutro's daughter in 1909. The Cliff House remains a decent restaurant with
spectacular views and a glimmer of Victorian elegance.
The newest Cliff House is a restoration of the original 1909 structure with a new North Wing that incorporates architectural elements of the old Sutro Baths. The lower terrace offers the
giant Camera Obscura, a device originally invented by Leonardo da Vinci that gives a 360 view of Ocean Beach and Seal Rock, inaccessible until the completion of the renovation work.
The restaurant is pricey, but the view is great and it's a nice starting point for the nearby
Land's End and
Ocean Beach. Two more reasonably priced neighboring restaurants are
Louis' and the
Beach Chalet Restaurant.
