One of the two downtown Los Angeles sites that make up
The Museum of Contemporary Art,
The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is housed in a landmark building designed by California architect
Frank Gehry. It's perched on the edge of
Little Tokyo, right next door to the
Japanese American National Museum.
MOCA has one the country's most important and extensive collections of art created since the 1940s, including masterpieces of
Pop Art and
abstract expressionism.
MOCA hosts more than 15 exhibits a year, featuring works by new artists, as well as more established ones, in media as diverse as you can imagine - really. Film, video, dance, performance, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, design - they all make their way into the galleries at
MOCA.
Many of the exhibits are appropriate only for
older children, although the Museum has an extensive and award-winning
educational outreach program operating in area schools, and holds regular art workshops on Sundays for
families.
Membership gets you free admission to the museums for two people, free parking, advance notice of exhibits and events, and a
Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Museum. It costs $65 a year. An additional $90 a year gains admission for two extra people, and reciprocal membership at 23 museums throughout North America.
