The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the best enviro-friendly place in Dallas-Fort Worth, the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a science museum, a 289-acre wildlife sanctuary, and a science resource center.
The wildlife sanctuary includes over four miles of guided or self-guided nature trails. (Pets are not allowed in the sanctuary.)
Two picnic areas are located on the property - one on Bluestem Trail, and the other just off the parking lot.
The preschool natural science program introduces kids to the natural world through nature walks, hands-on science activities, and classroom activities. Classes meet for two hours a day, three days a week during the school year.
Summer nature camps are offered for kids ages five to 12. Visit the website for schedules and tuition.
Memberships, seasonal passes, and annual passes are available.
The Museum is closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.
Founded in 1967, the Heard consists of a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum for the primary purpose of educating children about nature. The Heard exists to bring nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore, and preserve our priceless environment. In keeping with Miss Heardâ??s vision, the Heardâ??s purpose is threefold:
education, conservation, and preservation. Through education, particularly for young people, the Heard emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation.
