For over 30 years, The Malt Shop has been serving up burgers and fries, shakes and ice cream, and other diner fare. Soups and salads are made from scratch, and the menu offers a wide selection for vegetarians - including, of course, veggie burgers. Kids meals cover all the basics, and include an ice cream cone for dessert.
The fries and malts are topnotch, though the service can be slow at busy times. Luckily, kids have crayons and coloring sheets, and the interesting photos lining the walls and a small aquarium, to divert them while they wait. Overall, this neighborhood joint is a good bet for tasty comfort food, and inexpensive, casual family dining.
There are lots of highchairs, and the tall, dark-wood booths in one room, and "stage" seating in another, provide plenty of options for large and small groups. On some nights, there's live piano music. If there's a wait, kill time by browsing in the shop downstairs if it's open or hanging out on the long pews in the waiting area - or get your order to go!
