about The Museum of Childrens Art (MOCHA):
Kids get to let their creativity loose with all the tools of the trade at the Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA), a cheery, sunlit space in downtown Oakland. Brushes sweep dramatically across paper. Beans and macaroni fall upon cardboard with a noisy rattle.
Here, kids can find their inner Kandinsky through summer camps, drop-in studios, classes and birthday parties. There is also a gallery featuring rotating exhibits of local and international children's art.
Drop-in Art: For children five and under, the Little Studio and Loft Studio play with an abundance of beans, macaroni, clay, paints, glue, glitter, and more for self-paced exploration. For those who need a mid-masterpiece escape, there is a playhouse with toys and blocks and soft bean bag chairs to snuggle up in to read. Check the museum's Web site for the current schedule. Drop in art is open Tue-Friday 10-5pm and weekends noon-5pm. Drop-in fee is $7 per child and adults are free. Old tee shirts are provided to protect clothing.
Summer Camps: When school is out, the kids at MOCHA summer camps spend each week exploring a different theme, from outerspace to edible art and Picasso to pirates. Camp runs from 8:30am-3:30pm. (Precare and aftercare available for additional cost.)
Birthday Parties: For an arty party, MOCHA will supply a project with all materials, an art instructor, a festive environment, paper goods, a template for invitations, and open studio passes for all guests. Party host supplies food and refreshments and at least one adult to host and help. Party costs start at $225 for a two-hour party with up to 12 guests (ages five and under) or up to 15 guests (ages six and over). $10 for each additional guest. $4 per optional Arty Party bag. Themes include masquerade, fairytales, ooey gooey, and more.

MOCHA is awesome! I am a member and I take my niece and nephew there all the time. The staff is super friendly and the projects rock! The little studio is great during the week and on the weekends they open up the top floor for extreme art making! The energy and vibe is amazing...check this place out and tell all your friends. The membership is a great value and now they are partnering with local businesses and other children's museums...can we say discounts!!!! If you haven't been...go!!!!!!
MOCHA is the perfect place to bring my future artists! My pre-schoolers love the variety of projects and neat materials that change each trip. I love taking their projects home but getting to leave the mess at MOCHA ! Staff is friendly, and I love the extra perk of coming on Fridays so we can enjoy the farmer's market open on 9th.
Due its size my kids weren't entertained very long. Mocha offers a variety of mediums but the work area is just to tight for the kids to truly explore. Also, there needs to be at least two staff persons to maintain the space...but again, it's so small!
