Unless you live or work downtown or are heading to a
Wings game, Detroit's
People Mover is thought to be more a source of entertainment than a transportation vehicle. A trip on this above-ground train is indeed fun - and allows a view of Detroit like no other - but it really can be a great help in getting around the heart of the city. The
People Mover loops around
Joe Louis Arena and
Cobo Hall past the Municipal Center to the Renaissance Center, up to
Greektown, and around toward
Campus Martius Park. A great feature on the way is the
art that has been individually selected for each
People Mover station. Especially interesting is the work at the
Michigan Avenue station: a tile mural of 14 bronze characters trying to catch the train. A kids' favorite is the realistic statue of a man reading a newspaper at the
Grand Circus Park Station. Historically significant is artist Diana Kulisek's tribute to Mary Chase Stratton, founder of Detroit's
Pewabic Pottery, at the
Cadillac Center station (the stop for
Campus Martius). All of the green tiles used in the design were made in 1935 by Stratton herself for the Stroh family (of Stroh's Brewery).
