Rare Hare is a spectacular spot for art camps and birthday parties! What makes it so special is the quality of the people who run the camps and parties, the creative and amazing arts and crafts the children make using mostly recycled goods as well as the location and studio itself. We are repeat customers and will continue to be so! The environment is enriching, inspirational and supportive as well loving and safe for the children. Daily during camps, the kids walk to Mariposa or Viva Pops for a treat, breaking up the day nicely. Those walks are the topic of conversation for my daughter year round as they discover interesting things about the community along the way. The art my daughter has made hangs in every room of our house and is a source of great pride and memories for her. Truly a place of self expression for youngsters and adults alike!

I completely adore the Rare Hare Studio. Every time I pass the studio I look to see if the gate is open, just to see if I can stop by to say "HI!" to owner and magic maker, Erin Pennell. The Rare Hare has inspired me, collaborated with me professionally for a group of more than 50, and has provided many great conversation starters! I love talking about the studio and letting the San Diego community know what a gem it has in the heart of Normal Heights. I look forward to bringing my friends for a ladies get together over inspirational art, as well as continuing to work with Erin through my professional avenue.

Not only do your kids learn to make cool art, and even some sewing, but Erin provides a homey, maternal atmosphere that is rare in camps. She loves what she does and it shows. You don't get the feeling of a mill, or glorified babysitting, like so many camps give you, and neither do your kids (kids sense these things). If you are tired of less-than-enthused workers trying to stretch their patience over a passel of kids and not quite succeeding, try Rare Hare!

We love Rare Hare Studio! Miss Erin is a truly gifted teacher who inspires her students with her creativity, energy, and sunshine. Our two boys, 9 and 5, love the projects they do in her class. They also learn a lot - there is always a background story to all of their creations, and we are always happily surprised with the bits of art history and technique they are able to relay to us about their pieces afterwards.

Great classes for the whole family!

The Rare Hare Studio is truly a special place. We first discovered the studio over a year ago when we celebrated my son's birthday there. We were thrilled with the party and Miss Erin made everything so special. We've been going back for classes ever since. The Jackson Pollock Jr. class is our favorite. We always come away happy and inspired! Recently when someone told my four year old son he could be an artist when he grows up, he replied, "I'm already an artist!" I have to thank Miss Erin for her wonderful studio - it is a great place to show kids how much fun art can be. She is very positive and encourages children of all ages (and adults) to get involved and create!

My 8 year old, soccer-crazed son lavishes time and attention on his creations when he's working with Miss Erin at Rare Hare Studios. He even brings the finished work home and expands upon it, or creates more pieces using techniques and ideas he learned from her. She has an amazing array of fabulous recycled art materials. My son recently announced that her well-organized storage room is "My dream come true!"

My 7 year old daughter loved Ms. Erin's Fairy Art camp this summer. My daughter also went to surf camp, art museum camp, and cooking camp but Ms Erin's Fairy art camp was by far her favorite! She loved it because Ms. Erin put so much of herself into the camp.

I echo all the coments of the other parents. We celebrated my daughter's 5th b-day with Miss Erin at the Rare Hare. It was an AMAZING event which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. Even the little ones who were less into the art had tons of fun playing and hanging out in Erin's kid-friendly studio. Erin put so much attention and thought into the party and she was a joy to work with. Thank you Erin!

Miss Erin has created a fun and welcoming atmosphere in her studio and the space has something for every age group. Her background as a teacher is obvious--she knows just how to engage children, while giving them space to find their own creativity. This is a great addition to San Diego and we certainly plan on going back!

After taking a class with my almost three old at Rare Hare Studio, I knew we had stumbled across the perfect place for his third birthday party. Miss Erin’s attention to detail and creative energy shone through and the party was a huge success. She customized several art activities to my son’s interests. She also made sure that there were age appropriate art activities for the younger siblings so everyone had something to do. We were absolutely THRILLED with the party. It was FANTASTIC! Truly a very special day that we will remember fondly. We will be back!

Miss Erin (Pennell) has created an enticing place for children of all ages to explore art through a myriad of mediums. Miss Erin exudes creativity that draws the children like a magnet. Through the use of recyclable materials, children learn how to save their environment while developing their artistic talents. Whether it's mask making, watercolor,collage, fine art masters, Erin Pennell has something for every child. Some classes include parent involvement, such as her egg decorating class. In Rare Hare, Erin Pennell has created a bright, inspiring space for young artists to work and grow. From the moment you walk in through the beautiful dutch door (designed by Erin to offer light and air as well as a safe space for young ones), you know you're somewhere special. The studio offers a colorful, comfortable workspace that entices children to dive right in and try their hand at a variety of media—from watercolor and acrylic to pastels, collage, photography, and recycled objects. For each class, Erin offers an enticing array of materials, all carefully selected for the projects and age-groups at hand. As children explore various media, Erin gently guides them to develop technique and craft in an age-appropriate manner while all the while instilling an appreciation of artwork and the process of creating art. Since Erin Pennell opened her studio, my sixth-grade daughter has participated in a daylong workshop on Gustav Klimt (including learning about the artist, looking at colors, themes, patterns, and working with collage, pastels, and glazes), a four-day camp (photography, working with recycled materials, drawing and painting), and a series of three still-life classes (watercolor, pastel, collage. With each class, she’s come away bubbling with enthusiasm and full of stories about what she’s learned and created and how much fun she’s had simply working in the studio with Erin and the other kids. We’re both looking forward to future classes and camps!

Erin Pennell, the art teacher and studio owner, is highly creative, thoughtful, perceptive and works so nicely with children of all ages. Both of my kids, ages 7 and 11, have loved the classes they have taken at Rare Hare. Activities have ranged from photography, water color, collage and sculpture and the instruction has been terrific. We are delighted to have this studio in our neighborhood and it is a wonderful asset to our community. We are looking forward to summer camps!
