Prices are high and the rink itself is on the skimpy side when compared to
Wollman Skating Rink or the Sky Rink at
Chelsea Piers, but if what matters to you is location, location, location, this place is for you.
Nestled among the soaring art deco skyscrapers that comprise
Rockefeller Center (the site of the renowned Christmas tree and a requisite tourist highlight), this
skating rink feels like the center of the universe during the holiday season. The rink is set below ground level and offers spectacular views of the surrounding buildings, as well as the gold-leafed
statue of Prometheus that hovers above at the west side (Paul Manship, 1934). It's a treat just to stand on the terrace above (which is surrounded by colorful flags of all nations) and watch as skaters of varying abilities glide around below.
Skating is first come, first served, so arrive early and expect to wait, especially during the holiday season. Skate rentals are figure skates and hockey skates (sizes baby 6 to men's 14).
Private skating lessons are available in half-hour increments, at a fee of $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends. Call 212.332.7655 to make an appointment.
Skating periods run an hour and a half during high season (early Nov to early Jan).
The
pricing system is Byzantine and changes from weekday to weekend and from regular season to holiday season (early Nov to early Jan). Regardless, it's expensive.
Birthday parties at the rink are available for children ages five to 17 and require a minimum of 15 guests. Package prices begin at $22 per person plus an additional fee of $120. Further information is available online and by phone.
