Ton Kiang (Doong Gong) has been steaming and stir-frying in the "New Chinatown" area of the Richmond District for over 30 years. Over that time it has built a reputation among families as one of the best places to go if you're looking for good, freshly prepared Dim Sum and other Chinese specialties. The restaurant has a clean, slightly upscale look. Pale, muted tones are a great backdrop for Dim Sum carts cruising the aisles (at lunch) and, at dinner, for dishes featuring fresh seafood, prepared Cantonese and Hakka style. The service is extremely helpful and kid friendly. You're sure to find something for everyone at a Dim Sum lunch. Kids love fried foods and Chinese restaurants are good at preparing them. Ton Kiang Spareribs in Sweet Orange Sauce has meaty spare ribs, wonderfully crusted and surrounded with one of the best sweet and sour sauces around--not too sweet, sour, or thick. Other specialties worth trying: Prawns Roasted with Rock Salt and Chili Peppers, Ton Kiang Steamed Salt Baked Chicken, or Braised Meat-Stuffed Tofu. On weekends, the restaurant opens early enough for breakfast, if you're in the mood for delicately steamed dumplings filled with pork, beef, shrimp or vegetables. Try the noi mai gay, sticky rice with a savory meat filling steamed in a lotus leaf.
