about Top-Notch Beefburgers:
There's nothing fancy about this family run hamburger joint that has been serving hamburgers, fries, and milk shakes to several generations of Chicagoans. Seat yourself at either a table, a booth, or the counter - booster chairs and high chairs are available. The servers (mostly local teenagers) are quick and friendly. Crackers are available immediately for those who can't wait. Fries are fresh cut from real potatoes. Shakes are made from milk and ice cream. There's no kids menu, but none is necessary. Kids of all ages will be satisfied with the regular menu, which offers a wide variety of sandwiches. The burgers (1/4 lb. or larger) are made to order, with or without cheese, onions, lettuce, and tomato, and don't forget the sliced pickles - ask for extra! A home made soup is offered everyday; chicken noodle and beef vegetable come to mind as particular favorites. The cottage cheese and peaches salad has been a favorite since our oldest son started eating here as a toddler 20 years ago. A full breakfast menu is offered in the morning. Bathrooms are at the rear of this storefront restaurant and are funtional and clean, nothing more. There is no changing table.
tips:
Top-Notch is a bit off the beaten path, and it can seem like a long trek just to get a good hamburger. During the holidays, consider dining here with a trip to see the always elaborate holiday lights adorning the houses in the nearby Beverly neighborhood. Or, stop in for refueling before or after tobogganing on one of Chicago's only toboggan runs, located several blocks away on Western Avenue.
getting there:
Take the Dan Ryan Expressway to 95th Street. Go west on 95th for approximately 3 miles. Top Notch is on the north side of the street. Western (2400W) is the nearest big cross street. Parking is available on the street.
