about Topanga / Los Angeles Horse Back Riding:
Topanga offers guided trail rides for families with children starting at age seven. The property is in Topanga Canyon and the trails are a part of the Santa Monica Mountain Backbone Trail. Rides start on the ranch property (a part of which was once a Pony Express depot) and go up to several trails, all at elevation. On a clear day views encompass valley, mountain, and ocean views.
All guests should wear long pants (for comfort) and boots or tennis shoes (for safety) - high heels and open-toe/heel shoes (sandals, flipflops, clogs, etc.) are not acceptable and guests inappropriately shod will not be allowed to ride. No bags (including purses), packs or unsecured sweaters, sweatshirts, or hats can go up on the trail, so it's best to leave those at home or in the car.
All rides are by phone reservation only - so be sure to call and book ahead!
Children ages six and older can host a Los Angeles Cowboy Birthday Party at the Topanga ranch, too!
tips:
Bring helmets for riding kids.
getting there:
From Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley: Take the 101 North/West out of Hollywood. Stay on the 101 (Valley dwellers hop on the 101 at this point!) Cross the 405 freeway, keep heading West. Exit Valley Circle / Mullholland. Take a left at the top of the ramp (crossing over the Freeway). A big shopping center is to the left, the Motion Picture Retirement Home on the right. Pass a Taco Bell on the left. Take a right on Valmar (there's a light and a turning lane, and you can only go right). Valmar is exactly one mile long. At the end, bear right. Approximately 200 yards on the right (there's a big sign warning you it's coming up) is Old Topanga Canyon Road. Take it. Travel 1.7 miles (I think!)... Basically wind up hill. The ranch is at the top. If you start heading seriously downhill again, you've gone too far. Note that "Topanga Canyon" is a different road - so don't be tempted to turn onto it from the freeway - there is a Topanga exit) Park up top, either to the left or far right. You can also park just past the driveway in a turnout on Old Topanga - best if you're not sure of your car's ability to function on questionable surfaces. Just don't block the driveway for other guests or other cars. Do not drive down the driveway through the gate.
