Thousands of
imported trees and shrubs, compliments of nineteenth century philanthropist and botanist Henry Shaw, have taken root over the last century in 289-acre
Tower Grove Park, making it one of the loveliest (and largest) places to relax or expel energy in St. Louis.
The park offers a softball and soccer field, tennis courts, and
well-maintained paths for strollers and joggers. Victorian-style pavilions keep picnickers dry; fanciful sculptures keep them company. The park is also the locale for the seasonal
Farmers' Market and Bazaar.
For kids, nothing beats the
wading pool during summer months. The pool runs from a few inches deep to knee-high at the deep end. Lifeguards stand watch, but it's a good idea to be in the water with your child. A playground is nearby.
Park visitors can join docents who are often on hand to offer
guided group tours; others choose to view the park from the seat of a traditional horse-drawn carriage.
