Train fans love this popular
Griffith Park museum. Trains of all shapes and sizes are available for riding, for climbing, and for just looking.
Train
rides leave the depot every ten minutes for a trip around
Travel Town. Tickets are $2/person. Babies can sit on a lap and ride for free. These trains have bench-like seats that hold two people.
After a ride, children love to
stroll among the big train cars and engines that have been collected by the
Travel Town curators over the years. And, if they're careful, kids are allowed to
climb into the specially marked engines and boxcars, which leads to hours of pretending and imagining.
Inside the
Transportation Museum is a collection of old vehicles (for looking, but not for climbing). On weekends, from 10:30am to 3:45pm, a glass window opens onto a working
miniature train scene, complete with towns, cars, and tiny people.
Thomas the Tank Engine Playday takes place on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 4pm, and on the second Saturday of every month docents lead tours of the passenger cars from 11am to 3pm.
Travel Town has plenty of
picnic tables within range. A
gift shop full of train-related toys, clothing and costumes, is open during the museum's regular hours; proceeds help with the restoration of the trains at the museum.
And don't forget to visit the other train ride in the area:
the Griffith Park & Southern Railroad, on the other side of the Park.
Note: The last train ride departs 30 minutes before closing.
