This lovely wild spot, situated within sight of Husky Stadium and the hulking University of Washington dorms, was once a landfill (locals still sometimes call it the Montlake Fill) that has been reclaimed over the past decades and turned into a recreational gem. Come for an easy walk or bike ride, run, or dog walk. This is a great place to explore with smaller kids; distances aren't great, and wild areas are small enough to be manageable and just overgrown enough to be intriguing without being overwhelming.
The UBNA's ponds, grass- and woodlands, shoreline, and wetlands attract a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Over 180 species of bird have been spotted here; it's one of the best birding areas in the city. Look for turtles sunning themselves on logs along the marshy shoreline, or river otters swimming in Lake Washington. Eagles and great blue herons fly over frequently.
If you come around lunch or snacktime, stop by the Center for Urban Horticulture, located in the buildings to the left of the UBNA. A lush, shaded inner courtyard here is a perfect place to stop and rest.
