The University Book Store, in business since 1900, leads all college bookstores in the country in total volume of book and supply sales. It's not aimed exclusively at college students, though: it also carries an impressive stock of school and art supplies, Husky wear for all ages, gifts, and children's books.
The U-District, Bellevue, and Mill Creek locations host weekly children's storytimes. Check the website for times.
The store does have other locations in Bothell and Tacoma, but these don't offer the school and art supplies or events that would make them appealing if you're shopping with or for kids.
Even though it's an independent bookstore, it offers a vast selection of titles in stock, free shipping in the US, and complimentary giftwrapping. Expect the kind of extra-mile customer service that makes the independents so appealing.

getting there:
Located at 43rd and University Way in the University District. From I-5: Exit at the 45th/50th Street exits, and take 45th eastbound to University Way. Turn left. Bookstore is down about two blocks, on the left. Parking: Validated lot parking alongside the bookstore on 43rd and 15th. If that lot is full (and it often is), validated parking is available at other lots within walking distance. Click on the link above for locations. Public transportation: Served by numerous Metro bus routes from all over the city. Check Metro's trip planner for the best route.
