The US Navy Museum, an accredited museum and member of the American Association of Museums, is a self-guided facility.
Scavenger hunts for children are available at the Museum's front desk.

Kids will love touring the decommissioned destroyer Barry (DD 933), named for Commodore John Barry. Decommissioned in 1982 after twenty-six years of service, the Forrest Sherman-class destroyer was designated as a permanent display ship at the Washington Navy Yard. Operated by the Commander Naval District Washington, the ship is used for ceremonial purposes and is open to the public. A self-guided tour of Barry, with explanations posted at numbered locations, is available; active duty sailors provide additional interpretive information for visitors.
The Naval Historical Foundation has a gift shop in the Museum that helps support educational programs.
Various fast food restaurants can be found in several Navy Yard buildings, and picnic tables are available nearby, and throughout the Navy Yard, for those who wish to bring lunch and eat outside.
