Valley Metro buses serve the communities of Avondale, Chandler, El Mirage, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Guadalupe, Litchfield Park, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sun City, Surprise, Tempe, Tolleson, and Maricopa County. Most local routes run daily, but schedules vary from area to area. Riders can pick up a free copy of the comprehensive Bus Book at local transit centers, city and county offices, Valley libraries, and on the bus. Schedules are also listed online. The Valley Metro custom trip planner will plan and customize an itinerary online, or riders can simply call Customer Service at 602.253.5000 5am-9pm weekdays, 6am-8pm Sat, or 8am-5pm Sun for scheduling information and other transit questions. The automated phone system is available 24 hours per day. A pass or exact change is required to board the bus. Thirty-one day passes cost $45 and provide the best value for frequent bus riders. Youths ages six to 18, seniors 65 and over, and persons with disabilities may purchase half-price 31-day passes with approved ID. Three- and seven-day passes are also available at reduced prices; call Valley Metro for more information. Strollers may be brought on the bus if they are folded prior to boarding. Bike racks are on the front of every Valley Metro bus. Free transportation is provided in the Copper Square area of downtown Phoenix via DASH, a free downtown area shuttle. Look for the copper-colored buses stopping every six minutes or so at designated signs. Dial a Ride is a shared ride transportation service for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The Valley's light rail service is under construction and has a projected operations start-up date of December 2008. It will initially serve a 20-mile corridor in the most heavily traveled section of metro Phoenix and will eventually include other parts of Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, and downtown Glendale.
