About Venetian Pool

This historic pool was formed from a coral rock quarry in 1923, and is in the National Registry of Historic Places. Surrounded by waterfalls, coral caves, and grottos in Venetian style, this is truly a special place to visit. The pool holds 820,000 gallons of water and is fed with cool spring water daily. In the summer months, the pool is drained and refilled daily. The ecologically minded needn't worry; in 1988 a system was devised in which water is filtered back into the aquifer for reuse. This is the reason for the age limit on admittance. Non-toilet trained children could easily contaminate this fresh water pool. The facility has two swimming areas separated by a bridge. The wading area is 2 feet deep, and perfect for younger swimmers. The main pool varies from 3 to 8 feet deep. Whenever the pool is open there are 2 lifeguards on duty, keeping a close eye on the various swimming areas. Adjacent to the pool is a small man-made beach, and a palm-fringed island accessed over a cobblestone bridge. These, along with the caves and waterfalls, make for a wonderful afternoon of fantasy play! Food may not be brought in, but The Cafe at Venetian Pool offers a wide variety of food that is a step above the average concession stand. Birthday parties at the Venetian Pool can be reserved by calling 305.460.5306. Programs at the Venetian Pool include Swimming lessons offered by the Red Cross; Scuba lessons, from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors; and Water Aerobics. Check the website for current courses, times, and pricing. Coral Gables Residents can purchase tickets year round for $4.25 for adults and $3.25 for kids. Children under three years are NOT admitted to the facility. Children must be a minimum of 38 inches tall and three years old or provide a birth certificate proof of 36 months of age to enter facility and the pool.

Tips

Children under 3 are not permitted in the pool because it uses fresh, spring water (therefore, not chemically treated).

Getting There

From the north or south, take US 1 to Granada Blvd.(right turn if you're driving southbound, left if driving northbound). Granada winds through some beautiful parts of Coral Gables. Continue to the traffic circle. From the circle take DeSoto Blvd (2:00 position on the circle). The Venetian Pool is on the right.

Venetian Pool is fabulous now that our kids are older (6 & 9). We went at least once a week last summer and even celebrated our son's 6th birthday there in July with 35+ people. It is reasonablly priced, has a snack bar the kids love, shaded areas, a smaller kiddie pool with tables and chairs and lifeguards for the main area. We love it!

Expensive, but fun. A totally unique experience. Nice cool water even in mid-summer. Cafe is okay - hot dogs and ice cream. On rainy days, the pool closes for a half hour if they hear thunder - just wait it out. Sometimes the lifeguards give a tour and tell ghost stories when it rains.
