Not only is Vroman's Southern California's oldest and largest independent bookstore, it also has one of the best selections of children's books and hard-to-find toys to be found anywhere. The store won the coveted title of Publishers Weekly Bookseller of the Year in 2008, not to mention Nick's Parents' Picks 2009 award for Best Bookstore.
Children can grab a book and curl up with one of the many overstuffed animals scattered around the floor, or they can play with the dollhouse, train set, felt boards, or other toys while parents shop. Vroman's regularly features storytimes, author appearances, and other special events for children.
Storytime with Mr Steve is held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am, and balloons are part of the package. Who can resist? Just call to confirm, to avoid disappointment; despite evidence to the contrary, Mr Steve is only human.

tips:
The store offers free WiFi access. Also, Zeli's Cafe on the first floor has yummy coffee drinks for the grown-ups, and cookies or smoothies for the kids.
getting there:
From the 210 Freeway, exit on Lake Avenue. Go south and turn right on Colorado Boulevard. Turn right again on Oak Knoll Avenue, and parking is on the left.
