Modern-day settlement of Wayzata began in the 1850s, with the start of rail service from Minneapolis. Vacationers escaping the city for beautiful Lake Minnetonka would get off the train at the dock, and
board one of the steamers that ferried passengers around to the other villages and settlements along the lake. Today, the
Wayzata Historical Society and
Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce are located in the train depot, and during the summer, weekly concerts are hosted there. Rides are offered daily on the
Wayzata Towne Trolley at no charge from May to October. The rides originate at the depot, and stop at shops and restaurants, Heritage Park, the
Wayzata Library and Wayzata Beach. The
seasonal schedule lists specific departure times and stops. On Wednesdays at 1:30pm and 3pm, a special
Gold Coast Tour provides historical information and commentary. Reservations are recommended. Adults $6; Children (under 12) $3. Today, "downtown" Wayzata is the heart of a vibrant, affluent year-round community, and it's known for
quaint boutiques, interesting restaurants, beautiful homes, and great lake views. In the summer, boat rides are available on Lake Minnetonka to suit just about any budget and timeframe, including steamboat rides offered by the
Museum of Lake Minnetonka between Excelsior and Wayzata.
