The museum is closed through late 2011, for a Frank Gehry-designed expansion that will add 11,000 square feet of gallery space. But have no fear - admission will still be free!
The University of Minnesota's Weisman Art Museum is a welcoming place for families, and not just because admission is free. The glimmering, undulating Frank Gehry-designed exterior speaks to kids of all ages, just as the accessible modernist works inside do.
The museum's collection extends far beyond paintings and installations. Ceramics, pottery, furniture, and more are displayed in open, skylit galleries, providing space for children to roam, and plenty to explore. Free public tours are offered at 11am on weekends, and the museum frequently hosts family programs and live performances.
The museum store beckons with plenty of lovely items, including many toys - but lots of breakables displayed on low shelves too, so exercise caution.
Cubbies near the entrance allow for storage of bulky coats and strollers. Restrooms are a bit out of the way upstairs, but easily accessible by elevator.
