An Ohio City landmark since 1912, the West Side Market is the largest indoor/outdoor market in the country, with 180 booths of the freshest meats, dairy, produce, bakery, cut flowers, ethnic foods and international delicacies.
Best bet for first-timers: Browse all the stands, to see the variety available (and note the price variations, even from one zucchini to the next). Then, stop at Johnny's Hot Dog or the West Side Market Cafe for soup or a sandwich, or get Chicken Swarma at Maha's Falafil (or indulge in fresh baklava at the bakery) while you mentally make your shopping list.
Then, go back to the vendors, and be ready to be plied with promotions ("buy-these-cantalopes-I'll-give-you-these-bananas") and free samples.
Amenities include restrooms (downstairs - no changing tables) and pay phones, in the parking lot. Also, inside near the stairs you'll find a tiny newsstand with assorted over-the-counter remedies, all of Cleveland's alternative newspapers, and periodicals in several languages.
