about West Woodland Park:

An innovatively designed playspace with an outdoor-adventures theme. Children run happily around the curves of a large rock-lined spiral; they climb on boulders, logs, and stumps, and hide inside - or climb on top of - a shelter built from large rocks. Swings, a basketball hoop, and big-kid and little-kid jungle gyms round out the picture. In the summer, barn swallows dive through the park's large grass field, catching bugs. Nearby, a perennial garden and benches invite passersby to stop and sit. Mature evergreens with their cave-like canopies and low limbs compel the climbers and the hiders. This park, adjacent to the Woodland Park Zoo's North Gate entrance, features a cool-looking moving sculpture that looks like a cross between a swordfish and a bird. It's on top of a tall pole -point it out!

tips:

After zoo hours, we've parked in the North Gate parking lot adjacent to the park and have never had any trouble.

getting there:

From I-5 (north- and southbound), take Northeast 50th Street exit, #169. Travel westbound about 1 1/2 miles, past the Woodland Park Zoo main entrance at Fremont Avenue North, to Phinney Avenue North. Turn right (north) on Phinney. Travel nine blocks to North 59th Street; turn right (east). The park is on the right. Park on the street along Phinney, or on 59th.
