Whitney Museum of American Art

While the Whitney might not be the first museum you'd think of for a child-friendly art afternoon, it does have an impressive collection, and might inspire young artists-in-training.

Family Activity Guides (special brochures for the Whitney's exhibitions, designed to introduce children and families to selected works of art and encourage opportunities for looking at art together) are available free of charge to all families who visit the Museum. Guides from past exhibitions are available in the museum gift store, along with a binder to collect them.

WhitneyKids Family Programs include Looking to Learn Family Tours for families with kids ages six through eight and nine through 12; Whitney Wees for families with kids ages four through five; Family Fun Art Workshops for families with kids ages five through 10; and Artist's Choice, Artist's Voice Art Workshops for families with kids ages eight through 12. Sarabeth's Restaurant offers a nice change of pace from the usual museum cafeteria fare.

Membership includes unlimited free admission for one year, invitations to member preview days and members-only viewing hours, and 10% discounts at the store and Sarabeth's, among other goodies. Family membership is $150, but check for special offers.
